Cayman Islands Legislative Assembly

(CNS): The Legislative Assembly will open Wednesday morning with a busy order paper that includes two pieces of legislation for debate in the first sitting of this meeting. Both the Legal Aid Bill and amendments to the Public Management and Finance Law to change the budget year are scheduled for debate. Also on the agenda is government’s motion to adopt the recommendations of the Electoral Boundary Commission, paving the way for ‘one man, one vote’ in single member constituencies for the 2017 General Election.

With dozens of financial statements and reports to be tabled and a question from the member for East End over previous proposals by government for a fuel storage depot in his constituency, lawmakers have a full day.

Although government has not yet stated how long this parliamentary meeting is expected to last, with many more bills to be presented, numerous parliamentary questions to be answered and private member’s motions to be debated, there could be several sittings before the House business is completed.

In the wake of the PPM’s election victory in 2013, Premier Alden McLaughlin, who had criticised his predecessor, McKeeva Bush, over the way parliament was being managed, said he planned to publish annual timetables for parliamentary meetings. However, with the exception of one occasion, the ad hoc nature of LA meetings has remained and no schedules have been published.

I watched the LA this morning and was so pleased to see so many unqualified audit reports being tabled. Does that mean that the negative CNS posters won’t be able to comment about public funds can’t be accounted for. Such a great achievement.
