Fuel petition expected to be longest for many years

Cayman News Service(CNS): Thousands of people have put their name to a petition backing government’s plans to hold the bulk fuel importers accountable for the prices at the gas pumps, and George Ebanks, the chair of the organisation behind it, is hoping to hand over a petition with a record-breaking number of signatures when he leads a march to the Legislative Assembly Wednesday morning. Ebanks urged people to come out and show the government it has the public’s support for the introduction of meaningful and effective legislation that will prevent price gouging and introduce a fair price for the fuel sold in Cayman.

He also appealed to local employers to give staff a little time off tomorrow morning so that they can attend the march and reinforce the message.

The march begins at 9:00 am Wednesday 14 October, from the lawn of the old Glass House to the steps of the LA, where the premier and Cabinet members will receive the petition. Ebanks claims it is supported by the “largest number of people who have become involved in a social issue in a very long time”.

During this current meeting of the LA, the government is expected to debate amendments to the legislation that covers the importation of fuel, which will introduce a regulator and a mechanism for price transparency.

Although government gave civil servants the green light to sign the petition, it is not clear if government workers will be allowed to take part in the march. CNS contacted the deputy governor’s office for clarification on the issue and is awaiting a response.

Why were you in your car and not on the street with the others? If the outcome is what we expect and we get cheaper gas prices I bet you will not be complaining about that !!!!

Always complaining but not willing to do anything !!!!

It was a joke moron. How much traffic gets held up by 25 people?? We drive through thousands of tourists stepping out randomly on the streets every day and according to some people, will have no problems driving through many more. The port will save us all… The protest should focus on the massive gain everyone will reap from the dock project, meaning you won’t give a rats ass about the gas price. The port will save us all…

Less than 30 people I see marching in George Town today. I just have to shake my head. If this was anywhere else you would have seen hundreds of people marching.

Caymanians are not getting anywhere because we are too complacent, too much at ease. We complain, cry for others to help us, yet we refuse to fight and unite for such a cause like this.

    🙁

There were more but some were still having breakfast, over a hundred were running late, sixty called in sick and a few more had to check by one yard before they could get there.

What do we want? Time travel! When do we want it? Irrelevant!

    • Mr Saxon says:

Not true. If your future self created a time paradox you would want the ability to travel in time before that event occurred.

When are we going to march for lower beer prices?

  6. Iggy says:

I am all for the goals of the march, all be it that we should look at all the possible ways to address it. What burned my goat was having these protesters block up traffic this morning and leave me idling in a line of cars burning up overprices fuel… Where can I send them a bill for this???

  7. Tellme says:

George,I am encouraged by your stance in leading this March. It is full time that some body do something about the ridiculous prices at the pumps. Hope this will yeild the desired result.
