Jeffrey Webb

(CNS): The cost of financing his own house arrest in New York is driving Jeffrey Webb, the former CONCACAF president and FIFA Vice President broke, according to claims filed in the courts. Caught up in the massive FIFA corruption and bribery scandal, the Caymanian football boss was released by the US authorities on a $10 million bond on condition he live within 20 miles of the Brooklyn court where the case is being prosecuted and pay for the relevant bail security.

But The New York Post is reporting that Webb can no longer afford to pay for accommodation and security in the pricey location and wants to move to his own home in Georgia.

Webb (50) is accused of taking millions of dollars in bribes in his role as the football boss and when he first arrived in New York he used a collection of designer watches, his wife’s diamonds, several luxury cars and numerous properties to cover the whopping $10 million bail bond to stay out of jail. But the house arrest conditions are becoming increasingly onerous, given that the former banker’s finances are also frozen.

The New York paper said that the court filing reveals that Webb wants his supervised release moved to his family’s home in Loganville, Georgia, as the cost of paying for 24-hour monitoring in New York has become unmanageable.

“The costs associated with maintaining his residence in close proximity to this courthouse and paying for the required security detail for the month that Mr Webb has been in the United States are now posing extraordinary financial and logistical burdens on Mr Webb and his immediate family,” the letter filed in the Brooklyn court addressed to Judge Raymond Dearie states. “This financial burden is worsened by the fact that nearly the entirety of Mr and Mrs Webb’s cash savings is maintained in bank accounts that are encumbered as a result of the indictment and forfeiture allegations in this case.”

Webb argued that living with his family would also allow him to take care of his young child, giving his wife, who is a doctor, a chance to find work.

The Post states that federal prosecutors are not opposing the bail modification as long as current security measures remain in place, paving the way for Webb to move to his Atlanta home.

One of more than a dozen FIFA officials swept up in the massive global football corruption probe, which could last months, Webb is next due to appear in a New York court in October.

He has also been charged by the Cayman Islands authorities in connection with a local corruption case relating to a contract with the George Town hospital for a card-payment contract. Alongside his former FIFA and CIFA colleague and alleged business partner, Canover Watson, and Watson’s former PA, Miriam Rodrigues, Webb is charged with fraud and breach of trust in the CarePay case.

A warrant was issued for Webb’s arrest and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions had indicated it was going to seek his extradition when he was still in Switzerland. However, following Webb’s agreement to go to the United States, it is not clear if the Cayman authorities have made any moves to enable Webb to face the local charges while his FIFA case rolls on.

I am amazed at the amount of blogs and the level of hateful messages being voiced over Jeff Webb’s ordeal. Why does it matter so much to the bloggers? He stole nothing from you nor me. Yet you sit by idly and watch our Government waste your money and you say or do nothing about it, except go dutifully to the pools and vote the same “friends or family in”. $150,000 for an E & Y report, $millions on the Port, $millions on the millionth report on the dump, $hundreds of thousands on the education system – and no changes, no projects..,, and we worried about Jeff Webb and FIFA? Seriously? We need to clean up our house first.

Which “pool” are you talking about? Not the Cayman-shaped pool in the Georgia Mansion I’m sure. Must be the CIFA “polls” at their sham elections this weekend you meant.

Have to ask how a low level bank employee managed to get funds to meet $10million bond……that alone is grounds for asking a few more questions. Didn’t realize there was that much income from the ” bakery “.

I am just so happy to see that people understand what a mess that Webb has gotten himself into and loosing everything so quick after being so high on himself and his game, not football. I wish to remind Webb that it’s hard going up in life , but easier coming down.

Wah wah wah, poor baby….you should have thought about your actions before doing them. You can rent something cheaper in New York, you don’t need luxury. Better get used to that, cells don’t have the luxurious that you were once use to either.

Don’t worry webbie you can rent a room in Harlem for under 400.0 a month. Get use to it.

Just One Night’s stay for the bunch of them (in separate rooms, plus expenses) could have funded the local football for a year!

Poor Sterling doesn’t dare offend his Caymanian listeners who only want good news about Cayman culture (like gay bashing and pepper jelly at Camana Bay market)) and Orrett is so busy trying to build a base for himself to run in the next election he is trying to figure out what to say that will win him support. Criticizing a once popular black Caymanian is risky for someone like him.

    • Anonymous. Concern caymanian says:

So why don’t you call the radio talk show and start the discussion. What happen you scared or what. You start the talk show discussion and we caymanians will follow you. Come on lets do it . Stop hiding behind cons.

How unfortunate, what a great opportunity lost for him personally and for the Cayman Islands, President of CONCACAF and VP of FIFA, a very desirable position and one that he could have had for many years and we in the Cayman Islands could have benefit from it,in the short time he was at the helm of CONCACAF we were fortunate to host the U15 boys and girls tournament, the U20 girls finals and numerous other FIFA and CONCACAF conference and forums, the economist impact was very positive for the island.
However, after so many years in charge of CIFA Mr Webb is not able to point at something tangible that he can say he built, e,g the unfinished goal project.
By now he probably realized no one really need so many expensive watches.

    • Anonymous says:

You fail to understand that he would not have reached any level of significance within FIFA if he was a man of good character and integrity.

      • Cass says:

@ 12:48. Are you suggesting the entire FIFA organization is corrupt? Further, are you suggesting that they used Jeff as the fall guy as well as the others? You have made a very broad statement and yet 10 people follow behind you to suggest they agree? If FIFA is corrupt to the core why wasn’t Sepp Blatter arrested? You sound like you know more than the general public, so do share!

Which is worse, waiting in prison, or moving into a Brooklyn motel instead of a nice New York penthouse.

Then he could look after his young daughter there and his wife can go back to work. What exactly is he doing everyday, that his wife has o look after his daughter?

  16. Anonymous says:

he could always save money by spending his time in prison while in trial like most other people that cant afford house arrest. What am I saying “he is better than THOSE people”.

And I hear those New York prisoners love fresh pork…

  19. Fear Play says:

The U.S. Justice system is largely based on the concept of “extracted settlement”. Arms are twisted, amounts are fixed, assets are transferred to the state and jail terms are adjusted accordingly. Guilt or innocence are of minor consideration.

You can only take so many cases to trial. The US would love to try this case although if he can help nail Jack Warner, he can probably get a deal.

      • Gaol Tender says:

Nope. The U.S. (and, more precisely, the State of New York) just wants a slice of the action.

He is the property of the State let them pick up his expense.

    • Anonymous says:

A major part of Mr. Webb’s bail conditions is to avoid going back to jail, while the case is in the NY Courts. If he is unable to sustain his own living, and security, he will be remanded in custody. I’m sure Mr. Webb doesn’t want the ultimate enforcement ruling, in his case, of “Property of the State”, that would have him lose his comforts & land him back in jail; thus, losing his freedom- again. In the U.S., he’s not afforded the continued luxuries [of living], like Canova, in the Cayman Islands.
