TS Erika Saturday 29 Aug 2015

(CNS): The remnants of Tropical Storm Erika are expected to bring unsettled weather to Cayman this weekend, according to local forecasts. The Cayman Islands National Weather Service (CINWS) warned that the weather associated with the Storm will bring heavy rain and thunderstorms as it travels west across Cuba. Erika, which wreaked havoc in Dominica, dissipated Saturday morning but there could still be flooding in low lying areas in Cayman as the weather system was described as a particularly wet storm.

In its last advisory on the storm on Saturday morning, the National Hurricane Center said the remnants of Erika were about 130 miles east of Camaguey, Cuba. Maximum sustained winds were near 35 mph with higher gusts. Dominica, Haiti and eastern and central Cuba are all facing possible life-threatening flash floods and mud slides as tropical squalls were predicted. Twenty people were killed in Dominica and four in Haiti as Erika passed across the island of Hispaniola.

I have a few peeves. The Hazmat or Cayman Prepared issued a severe weather bulletin and states “the next update will be at 4pm” (that was yesterday 29 Aug at 8:58am). I kept checking their website and as of 9:30am today – 31 August nothing further on the website.

Secondly, I am still trying to understand the reason as to why here in Cayman the local news via CITN stops at 6pm Friday and we hear no further until Monday morning. Are they saying that nothing happens on the weekend?

CITN posted the weather alert on their website, do they honestly believe that everyone has access to the internet? a computer? what about our senior citizens who are not tech savvy?

Just sayin….I don’t see the news anywhere in the world taking the weekends off
