(CNS): A 19-year-old former special support teacher’s aide at a government primary school has been charged with ten counts of sexual assault on seven female students. The man, who is from Bodden Town and cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared in Summary Court this week and was bailed to return to court on 6 August. The assaults are understood to have taken place at the unnamed school and all of the victims are said to be minors, though no ages have been released.

The man was originally charged on 25 June after the case was first reported by the school to social services, who then referred the matter to the RCIPS.

According to a statement released on Friday by the education ministry, the teenage teacher’s aide resigned after his arrest. The ministry said the first reports of the allegations were made to the Department of Education Services on 27 November 2014. Officials said background checks were conducted on the accused man and he was given a clean police record and had good references.

The ministry also said the victims had undergone counselling.
