Opposition Leader McKeeva Bush

(CNS): The annual anticipated drilling of the police commissioner by local politicians during Finance Committee is always much gentler than the rhetoric leading up to the top cop taking the hot seat and this year was no different. Although asked a number of questions last week about the police budget and resources, David Baines returned to the RCIPS HQ having dodged any serious ‘licks’. But just two days after his appearance, the opposition leader was questioning his management of the police.

McKeeva Bush made a short statement Friday following the news of a frightening home invasion in his constituency of West Bay, in which a grandmother and her 5-year-old granddaughter were subjected to a terrifying ordeal, when masked men burst into the home and demanded cash.

The opposition leader, who was recently attempting to broker some peace in his district between members of rivals gangs after a spate of fatal shootings earlier this year, said that something was “radically wrong” with police management. Accepting that rising crime had some connection to the economic situation, he said that alone was not responsible for the crime wave.

With over 400 officers, Bush said his district needed police to step up with a task force. West Bay does not need the helicopter flying over every night because that didn’t “mean a can of beans”, the opposition leader stated.

“I want to see the police do something,” he said, adding that it was “no good us keeping our mouth shut as it’s happening constantly”.

“I am not blaming any government,” the veteran politician said, as he called on the commissioner to take a look at what was going wrong in the top command.

Bodden Town MLA Anthony Eden endorsed the opposition leader’s comments and said there was a pressing need to deal with policing matters becuase whatever system was being employed currently obviously was not working.

MB: “I want to see the police do something.” When they did do something and show up at his house to arrest him he was not happy. I am confused.

They would much rather make grandstanding statements to the press than actually confront the man and try to tackle the issues.

Did he give any update on his meetings with the West Bay gangs?

Isn’t it amazing the friendly direct-line access this helpful fellow has to these armed gangs and their leadership – the very phantoms that have eluded the RCIPS for decades! Tell us again, was Legge an over-reacting drama queen, or did he apply proportionate measures given the company kept by some of our MLAs?

There are two people who are to blame for crime in West Bay. Baines in not one of them.

    Finally, McKeeva says something sensible.
