CONCACAF hires consultants to help clean shop

(CNS): As the regional football body, CONCACAF, comes to terms with is central role in the ongoing FIFA scandal and criminal investigations, Ted Howard, the current acting general secretary, has confirmed that it has hired a management consultancy firm to review the federation’s operations. A release from CONCACAF Tuesday said that firm Alvarez & Marsal will undertake a four to five-week evaluation of CONCACAF.

The assessment will examine the business and “recommend improvements to financial reporting processes, spending and cash flow management, third party vendor relationship management, and organizational effectiveness”, the football body stated, adding that the review would allow CONCACAF to focus on organizing events for fans, players, teams, sponsors and broadcast partners throughout the region.

The evaluation will be led by Carlos Vincentelli, a managing director based in the firm’s Miami office.

“The Confederation will benefit from the broad perspective and experience that Carlos brings from outside the world of soccer. This will help ensure the Confederation operates at the highest level of organizational efficiency and accountability going forward,” said Howard.

The news comes as Cayman’s football boss, Jeffrey Webb, and six other FIFA officials remain in jail in Switzerland awaiting extradition to the US. They are caught up in a major bribery and corruption investigation by the US Department of Justice, which claims the men held in Zürich, along with other former FIFA officials and numerous sports marketing executives, solicited and paid some $150 million in bribes for marketing rights over a twenty year period. In a separate investigation, the Swiss authorities are looking into the awards to Russia and Qatar to host the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

As FIFA scrambles to rebuild some kind of credibility, all of the regional federations are engaged in the process of internal examinations and CONCACAF, with more than 17 years of private sector and interim management experience in North, South and Central America, is hoping the independent consultants will help rebuild its reputation.

As well as hiring Alvarez & Marsal, CONCACAF has engaged Global Strategy Group to assist with public affairs and communications during the reform effort, while Sidley Austin LLP continues to serve as CONCACAF’s legal counsel.

  1. Here’s a tip: Stop being corrupt, committing fraud, and hiring riff-raff. That’s it and I won’t charge you anything. A PR exercise won’t cut it, unless you’re targeting eight-year-olds.

  2. John P Bodden says:

A financial consultant will be of little help since CONCACAF’s real problem is one of ethics. As long as people like Horace Burrell and others of his ilk are elected to office and held in high esteem there is no chance of real reform. This is akin to taking a sick relative to the hairdresser instead of a doctor.

Of course, CONCACAF inherits their ethics from FIFA, so reform has to take place there before the message can be passed down to CONCACAF. As long as the penalty for accepting a $40,000 bribe is a 30-day suspension and a $300 fine there can be little hope for any change within the criminal enterprise called FIFA.
