(CNS): The man accused of murdering Special Olympian Solomon Webster last September waived his right to a jury trial on Monday and asked to be tried by a judge alone. Justice Charles Quin will now preside over the case, in which the crown says that Jose Sanchez from West Bay shot Webster (24) in the leg with a Colt 45 handgun. Despite being wounded in the groin area, Webster died as a result of blood loss as the bullet hit an artery. Sanchez has denied being the man who fired the shot at Webster.

As a result of legal issues between the crown and defense team, the trial, which was due to commence Monday, was adjourned before the director of public prosecutions opened her case against Sanchez. The hearing, which is expected to last two weeks, is now scheduled to begin tomorrow at 10am in Grand Court One.

Webster, who worked at a George Town car wash, had learning disabilities but he was a keen sportsman who played football and basketball. He won a gold medal for his country when he competed at Bocce in the regional Special Olympics in 2010.
