Godfrey Nixon Way roadworks

(CNS): A collapsed utilities manhole on Godfrey Nixon Way caused even more traffic chaos in the capital Thursday when the National Roads Authority was forced to close the key road by the Butterfield roundabout. The roadworks and heavy rain were behind the collapse, officials said, and the wet weather is expected to delay the critical road project, which is the start of a much wider upgrade of roads across George Town.

The NRA is working on widening the road to three lanes designed to help improve traffic flow in the busy area of the capital.

However, persistent wet weather is undermining the work and is expected to delay completion of the link road, which is closing at night to try and help make up for lost time. Once Godfrey Nixon is upgraded, the NRA will be heading to Smith Road for upgrade works and a new link into Elgin Avenue.

That road shouldn’t have been closed until AFTER rush hour. They could have waited until 6-630p because the music didn’t start until 9PM!!!
    It was fantastic though…

“Our culture” = Trinidadian and Jamaican culture which we now pretend is ours…like steel bands. Caymanian? Seriously?

I dont understand why if traffic on godfrey nixon is closed the traffic lights are still on and holding up traffic there? Does these people really not think at all?

I really would love to know who approves these closures on Harbour Drive.

I had dinner at Guy Harvey. When I left around 10:00 there was a lovely band playing to about 50 lucky people. There was a DJ set up on the side road with no one listening. The bars had no customers, nor did the food stands.i am not sure what this event was for, (neither did the DJ or some other folks on the road) and as they did no promotion it seems the island did not know either.

I hope these 50 elite people enjoyed the show knowing the inconvenience caused to the thousands of people caught up in the traffic mess.

The museum set up about 20 chairs for an event last year, a “once a month” Cayman Culture was attempted last year as well.

If the idea is to promote Geogetown, all these events do is damage.

Close Cardinal Ave if you must. Or use the parking lot behind Kirks, or Royal Watler… taste of Cayman worked just fine at the cruise port.

Of course no one would venture back into GT after having spent an hour or more in traffic getting through there earlier. What iritates me the most is the lack of notice. How long ago was this foolish road closure planned? Why was the public not notofied? Why were GT businesses not informed? Who planned this? Who benefited? I for one would like to know who was the dumb ass in charge.

It is outrageous that the Government allows the Hardrock to close the road for concerts – that’s twice in a couple of months that we’ve had total gridlock as a result. Will the GT MLAs do anything about it? I wouldn’t hold your breath

I think it’s time for the authorities to come to their senses and stop holding street dances right in the middle of one of the main roads in Grand Cayman. Any of the hundreds of people unfortunate enough to be part of, and witness the mayhem on the roads around George Town at 5 today must agree that this is sheer stupidity. There were cars careering all over the road going towards the Jacques Scott lights tonight from AL Thompson’s, racing over the lot of land near the lights, desperate to get through the traffic, but causing a complete bottle neck in their attempts. And as for Elgin Avenue. God knows what was happening there because the traffic was at a standstill heading towards town. I saw a couple of policemen driving in the opposite direction – looking as though the entire chaotic situation was going right over their heads.

How can the Police be SO stupid as to allow this mayhem to take place every time someone wants to organize a danece. Hold it on some piece of vacant land somewhere – the Government must own something, somewhere – unless Dart now owns it all.

And I do NOT want to hear about it being “our culture”. The days are gone when Cayman was a laid back little backwater, times are changed, and Cayman is full of professional people working hard who would like to be able to get home at the end of their working day.

And while I’m at it: lowering the speed limit on West Bay Road won’t make any difference to the number of people being knocked down/car accidents. All it does is to cause everyone to be crawling along, nose to tail, getting more and more irritated, and will result in people rear-ending the car in front because they are too close. And those that want to drive too fast will continue to do so. And there won’t be a policeman in sight.

Godfrey Nixon Way being partially closed was not to blame for this utter mess. It was the closure of Harbour a Drive in places. It was still a mess at 8pm.

No excuses, sheer incompetence by CIG, NRA and RCIPS. Friday evening rush hour turns into gridlock all over GT, yet no one seems to care. RCIPS should have been out there helping to eas the flow of traffic, but nowhere to be seen.

They were too busy preparing to check license coupons on Saturday at the top of walkers road. Our cops must be the most incompetent in the region!

Really CIG ??? I am so angry, after having to deal with the loss of sales from the never ending Batabano road closures last Saturday, we have yet another ill thought out closure right fricking before Mother’s Day? WTF? My God what are the pols thinking? How on God’s green earth am I supposed to run a business when no customers can freaking get to my store? Imbeciles in charge, who cannot see the effect of the same damn dominos that the are playing at Sunset.

sad to say, but does seem like our govt is actively trying to crush GT businesses. One can only guess with whom they are bedfellows.

Were the two guys in front of Bayshore Mall assembling or removing a stage at 2:00 this afternoon. Either way, Harbour drive was closed and they seemed to be undermanned and taking their time.

    • Anonymous says:

Well they must have removed everything right after the show as I passed by at 7:30 and the street was clear… Except for the “police road closed signs”. The road was still closed when I passed through town again around 10:00am.
