Robberies beat police and businesses

(CNS Video): Local liquor business owners said they are doing all they can, spending thousands of dollars on security, but the police and prosecutors are not doing their part to tackle robberies. Crime figures indicate that armed hold-ups are once again on the rise, with a 100% spike in the first quarter. Detectives are currently on the hunt for at least one, if not two, booze store bandits.

Over the last month four stores have been hit, from West Bay to Grand Harbour, two by a man armed with a machete and two where a gun was involved.

Police have not yet said whether they are looking for two different robbers or whether the machete store robber upped his game with a firearm.

But with booze stores in the firing line of local criminals, Kenneth Bryan asks what more can small business owners do when, despite massive investments in security, they are being targeted by masked gunmen, putting staff and customers at risk, as well as increasing the costs of doing business.

And why is this still allowed to go on?

What are you saying; that the bullying, dishonesty, racism, child abuse, violence etc happens through him?

At least the robbers are only targeting liqour stores, after all it is the most dangerous drug on the island. We can only conclude that this is God’s plan and what is transpiring in time is all through God’s infinite wisdom and perfect word. If it wasn’t meant to be, God wouldn’t let it be. Remember ALL things happen through him.

And yet again, absolving ourselves of all responsibility. So ‘God’ in his infinite wisdom has come up with a plan that involves persons committing robberies using guns and machetes?

Really? This is the ‘God’ that you choose to worship? One that encourages violence and fear?

Tell me, as ‘ALL’ things happen through him in his perfect word and plan, why would you choose to worship a ‘God’ that allows young children to be physically, verbally and sexually abused?

That is his plan for them? To be brought into this world to suffer? Nice ‘God’ that you worship.

Aww, No one knew I was being sarcastic?

I don’t know what your trying to prove. The God I serve is perfect. For there is only one Him. And he works in mysterious ways which mere humans cannot phathom. May the flying spaghetti monster continue to bless everyone with his pasta and noodles. Amen.

I am more scared of people like you than all the robbers on this island together.

You are spot on Clear as mud! THAT is the answer.

Drop your prices, so we can all afford a drink.

or just ban alcohol and then you will have more money

      • Cheese Face says:

        Yeah, and ban religion too!

        • Cass says:

Ban religion! Go back to your goat yard with that BS. DO not think for a minute that Cayman will ever go down that road! Who are you to come here and dictate to people. Religion, like many other things is a choice! You don’t want to believe in GOD, your problem, if you want to worship a rock go ahead! YOUR choice. But do not think for a second you can dictate other peoples choices for them! Sick and tired of my own Caymanians making us all look bad for their own selfish greed and foreigners like YOU who want to dictate to us all how to live when you came and found us here! CAYMAN will never be an atheist country! NEVER. If you don’t like that then catch the next flight out, of YOUR choice.

          • Cheese Face says:

What an angry little person you are…

You also missed the point. Let me spell it out for ya. Some people think banning alcohol will solve all the problems we are facing. Others think that religion is to blame for just about everything. We could ban them all, or, we could just live and let live.

I have no intention of telling people who, or what they should worship. It’s their choice. But have a think about your words. “Who are you to come here and dictate to people” do you have any idea how religion spread to the Caribbean?

And Cayman is my home as much as yours, so I’ll be hanging around for a while. Remember, there are no indigenous Caymanians xxx.

To significantly reduce crime, we have to teach our children from they are very young, while they are in Pre-Schools and Primary Schools to be proud that they are kids who are proud to say that they are honest and do not steal and rob; that they are caring, peaceful and peace-loving; that they respect themselves and others; that they will grow up to work for what they get; that they will grow up to look after their kids and as far as possible, keep them all under one roof rather than have many baby mothers, or baby fathers who are never present in their children’s lives. Then, we will see a significant drop in robberies and thefts. Crime is not a police thing; they can only respond after the fact; crime is a community cancer.

How to Stop Robberies – Teach our children from while they are very young, while they are in Pre-School, while they are in Primary School, to be very proud of themselves as honest persons, truthful persons, respectful persons, well-mannered persons. Teach them to be persons of good character. You will still get the odd one out, but you will have less people committing serious crime. Guaranteed.

Better exterior lighting will go further than a defenseless security guard. With the bright LED lights now available, lighting up the surrounding area from dark until staff leave is easy. This is also helpfull for your customers.

Perhaps a simple buzzer system on the doors where someone is only allowed in when the staff feel comfortable. I have seen it work successfully in many places. At least with this a masked man can never enter the store.

Might as well save on the pensions and health insurance and send the entire police force home. Then just take the $30,000,000 lavished annually on law “enforcement” and create a slush fund for the most needy robbers.

In the Cayman Islands, the police serve mostly as a post-event sympathizers. We only call them after something “unpleasant enough” has happened in our day – so that we feel like we’ve done something to document that this stuff actually happens, and/or for insurance purposes. They also set up blockades for parade routes, street parties, governors’ teas, and for a few weeks every Christmas to New Years, when they prosecute a small random sampling of 2 or 3 traffic offenses. Not sure where they are, or what they do the rest of the year when they are not admonishing the public for skewing their statistics. Very little sincere marine border enforcement with unimpeded guns and drugs arriving that fuel our violent crime and social ills. Their budget is KYD$32mln a year, close to USD$40mln, which is similar to some small city budgets in North America with 5 times our territory’s population. Something is very amiss with the ROI. We’d like to see a breakdown of how they currently spend our money.

    • Cass says:

I would like to add to what you have said here: One of the first objectives of the current Government also known as the PPM, was to cut the budget for Marine Border Patrol; meaning less police on the waters, less surveillance and a lot of unwanted people, guns and drugs wash ashore. This was a direct hit for the Country, yet no-one said anything, we seem to just accept this level of incompetence and lack of proper enforcement, and why? Why are we being led by the blind? Think about it.
