Where does the figure of $5million come from? That’s more than double the actual cost of the scanner itself. Where did the rest of the money go?

Probably the MRI suite which requires built-in safety features to protect medical personnel working close to the magnetic field.

But wasn’t this simply replacing the previous 1.5T scanner? If that’s what the money really was spent on it’s a pretty expensive new MRI suite.

CNS, you really should check around before saying that this service is unavailable in this region. In fact MRI scans have been available in Cuba for over 10 years, and at one third the cost, and fully reimbursable on US based health insurance plans. Maybe Cuba can’t offer an MRI with all the amusement park bells and whistles but what it can offer is a solid diagnosis from well experienced veteran doctors who aren’t on the payroll of insurance companies.
