Enquiry opened over gun on school bus

(CNS): A teenager from John Gray High School is the subject of a police investigation after reports that he may have been carrying a firearm on a school bus. Officials from the education ministry have confirmed that an “incident occurred” recently on a public school bus, although they have refused to state that a firearm was the cause of what is now a police investigation. However, other sources have confirmed to CNS that a student was seen with what appeared to be a gun.

The chief officer in the ministry of education, Christen Suckoo, told CNS that the police were involved and that they could not comment.

“There was an incident but we cannot confirm that there was a firearm involved in that incident, however the incident has been handed over to the RCIPS to investigate,” Suckoo said, adding that it had happened on a school bus and the police would determine the details.

CNS contacted the RCIPS and received the following statement from a spokesperson Friday:

“The RCIPS can confirm we received a report  on Tuesday 19th of May 2015 alleging that a student travelling on a  John Gray High School bus was seen with what could have been a firearm. The matter is currently under investigation.”

The news comes just a few weeks after another teenager of school age who was attending youth court last month was arrested when he arrived at the courthouse with a flare gun in his backpack.

  1. Let's Do something ... says:

Why is it that everytime a negative incident happens in this Country our first response is – Are they Caymanian? Let’s deport them? It’s the Teachers/School fault?
Why don’t we instead acknowledge that young people are engaging in dangerous anti-social behavior and ask WHY? Why and What is the reason? What can we do or are not doing? Are these children from the % of Residents ( primarily Caymanian) who are not enjoying the benefits of the Cayman prosperity? Ask yourself – how can I help? Who should I call to contribute to solving/addressing this problem? How can I volunteer or contribute?
    Here are some positive” suggestions:
    1. Contact Big Brothers, Big Sisters.
    2. Contact the Sports & Youth Organizations that offer programs in your District or Island wide.
    3. Contact your Church and see how you and them can contribute to families and children – summer is coming up.
    4. Just like tidings to the Church, pick a Charity/organization/ family in your community that is not doing well and help them out.
    5. Contact Michael Myles to find out how you can help keep the Skateboard Park open as it has no funding and may have to close soon due to lack of financial support.
    6. Contact Youth ACT – a non-profit that holds Crime Prevention programmes in the schools, and donate or volunteer.
    7. Contact Red Cross, who runs a number of youth programmes.
    8. Contact your schools to see how you can help.
    9. Contact the MLA’s of your District to find out how you can help at a district level.

I could go on and on and on… The point is you cannot deport unemployment, high cost of living, mental health issues, youth and families feeling ANGRY that they are not living as well as you. Since you can’t deport our social or economic problems – and it’s here to stay and getting worse – ASK yourself:

HOW CAN I MAKE A DIFFERENCE?
    WHAT CAN I DO?

Remember we are a God-Fearing people and God will judge you!

Fine and happy to help in relation to any Caymanians kids. Foreign kids however should not be our problem and the solution should be easy.

I have news for you, it’s not only Caymanians in there. When all these foreign “civil” servants are brought in to work, their child/ren is/are allowed to attend the Government schools. So don’t jump all over Caymanians (I do not know the Nationality of the child, but just FYI).

I posted when the first “fight” happened, but people said I was too harsh. Put all those students involved in a room with administration, RCIP, parents, counselors, etc. and do not let them out until you find out what the issue is. All those students needed to be on probation (in the school) a month or two ago. Do not suspend those students as that is what they are looking for- instead, use after school detention, parent must come in at all disciplinary hearings etc.
You want peace in the school system- the staff need to be in control and the students need to know that the staff are the ones in control. Right now sounds to me that the students are running the school. Tighten up ALL the school rules immediately from dress code to who goes to the bathroom and when (and it should now be one at a time with a teacher standing outside the door).

While your at it you should look into the two riots at CHHS a couple weeks ago and again yesturday.

My child is scared to go to school. there is video of the fights, knifes and guns pulled but the principle is now an expert at keep it out of the public.

    CHHS is out of control!

From what I have heard, there is plenty more stuff going on at that school which is all swept under the carpet! Nobody wants to admit that things at John Gray are completely out of control and Government doesn’t want to tackle the problems because it may offend some voters – likely the parents of some of those completely out of control kids.

Before everyone starts ranting about deportation, failing schools, the demise of the RCIPS, just take a moment before judging and allow everyone to handle this in the appropriate way.
