Bush returns to ‘UDP’ moniker

(CNS): The opposition leader seems to have abandoned plans to change the name of his party from the United Democratic Party (UDP) to the Cayman Islands Democratic Party when he delivered his response to government’s budget on Wednesday in the country’s parliament. McKeeva Bush spoke about the “UDP”, not just in the past and present but in future as well, as he appeared to reclaim ownership of the party name.

Cayman News ServiceFollowing the losses suffered by the UDP in the 2013 election, after the party was torn apart over Bush’s arrest at the end of 2012, the party revealed plans to change the name after it was registered with the elections office.  The UDP was formed in 2001 by McKeeva Bush, following the infamous coup that overturned Kurt Tibbetts’ government and introduced the era of party politics. The name change had been described by party officials as a response to public encouragement to modernize.

However, over the last year or more very little has been said about the name change and during his debate in the Legislative Assembly on the budget Bush spoke about the UDP frequently and the party’s future policies.

Although the opposition leader spent much of his two-hour debate berating the premier over the criticisms of him, he in turn criticized the premier  for taking credit for what he said were all UDP policies and things that were set in motion during his former UDP administration. But in addition to talking about all the things he claimed the UDP had done, he spoke about its ongoing policies, giving a clear indication that he remains the leader of the UDP and not the CDP.

He said the UDP was committed to policies that were business friendly and that would grow the population, as he continued to press home his position that Cayman must bring in wealthy people in order for Caymanians to benefit. Bush pressed the UDP position of demand supporting economic growth from more people.

There is politics and then there is Cayman politics. The Caymanian people have my pity but it is just what they deserve. The only fix is better education across the board.

Much as I hate to say it or agree with McKeeva..Alden your memory is short as it was your party that put us in the mess that we were in. I am grateful for Marco because I seriously doubt anything would change with Alden and Kurt running the show.. As far as the name PPM or Progressives, UDP or CDP, what s the difference? Red or green, nothing changes..

Same $hit different name. How is this different from the PPM becoming the Progressives?
Whatever you call UDP or PPM they have contributed equally to the mess that is the Cayman Islands in 2015. No solutions for high unemployment for Caymanians, crime and people losing they homes.
