Access limited on GT road as work presses on

Cayman News Service(CNS): As government presses ahead with road works in the capital as a prelude to the rejuvenation of George Town, overnight work is set to start on Godfrey Nixon way on Wednesday. The National Roads Authority (NRA) will be closing night-time access to the link road from Eastern Avenue Wednesday night until the evening work to redevelop the road is completed. Work on the road will now take place round the clock so traffic will be only one way from 5pm to 12am as this stage of the project gets underway.

The works are part of a major redevelopment of roads in George Town, which will move to the Smith Road area and then a new Elgin Avenue to Shedden Road link as government paves the way for its revitalization project in the capital which will eventually according to the government see George Town transformed into a vibrant town in the evening as well as during the day.

Pinning its hopes on the private sector embracing government’s mixed-use modern urban plans, which will see the redevelopment of infrastructure and changes to the planning law, Planning Minister Kurt Tibbetts recently gave a snapshot of the proposed project at a Chamber of Commerce lunch.

I am a bit confused on this in general and hope someone can help me. A few weeks back I saw what appeared to be Island Paving, I assume on behalf of government, dig up the whole one lane of Spotts straight and repave it. They did the same with the whole length of the BT bypass. Both of these took them possibly two Saturdays and a maximum of three nights. Why does it take so long on this piece? Everytime I pass this road, a major road in town, there are no workers and I see almost no progress on it. Can someone explain to me why this one seems to take so long with such disruption while the other roads were done so quickly with hardly any disruption?

The NRA is digging up the roads all over the city and leaving them half done for weeks. This is slackness and would not be tolerated of a private business. The BT main road in the Prospect area is left in a deplorable condition with no work being done for a week. Meanwhile the implements left in place have been run over and destroyed at the taxpayers expense. Why did they start the road if they did not know they could finish it in good time? Now they are starting other road work in other areas?

Why do we have people hired to work on roads? This is a waste of taxpayers money. We are also competing with the private sector in an unfair manner. Clearly we would be out of business if the playing field was level. No one would hire an NRA.

STOP WASTING OUR MONEY. ABOLISH THE NRA!!!!!!!!!
