(CNS): Godfrey Nixon Way, which is an important link between Eastern Avenue and the Butterfield Roundabout in George Town, is being widened to three lanes. The National Roads Authority (NRA) began the preliminary road works at the beginning last week and said they hope to have the work completed by the end of the month. The work will be taking place mostly between 10am and 2pm but there will also be some night work undertaken as both the utility providers deal with their equipment and the NRA.

According to the timeline of work supplied by the ministry, Caribbean Utilities Company (CUC) will relocate existing light poles and dampen existing power lines to allow for drainage installation from tomorrow (Friday) until the 17 April. Then, during the week starting 19 April new sidewalk and curbing will be installed. The removal and relocation of water meters began on 1 April and officials said that work is now finished.

“We will endeavour to operate our construction and traffic control plans to minimize undue delays for drivers,” said Managing Director Paul Parchment. “At the same time we sincerely ask for continued patience as we carry out these much needed improvements to the road network.”

With the work happening in the day between 10 and 2 when traffic levels are high, drivers are asked to traverse the area carefully.

Once the road project is finished, the new Godfrey Nixon Way will have two travel lanes east and west and a central turning lane similar to that which currently exists on Elgin Avenue and Canal Point Road. The authority will also reconstruct the existing sidewalk on the southern extremity which is shown in purple on the map (see below) for pedestrians and access to businesses and developments.

On the road’s northern edge, works will include a bicycle lane from Ashgo Lane to the Butterfield Roundabout, which will also serve as an emergency lane where stranded vehicles can be moved to avoid blocking traffic.

So now we’ll have two lanes of bumper to bumper traffic trying to get onto the roundabout while giving way to the two lanes of traffic coming onto the roundabout from NS Road? What they really need to do is extend that slip road for cars turning left onto the bypass and allow that traffic to merge into the bypass traffic on the approach to Lakeside.

No, 13/4 @ 9:27am, the 3rd lane that they are adding is merely a turning lane in the middle, not a driving lane. However, most people here do not understand the middle turning lane anyway…

get rid of the roundabouts and install Normal lighted intersctions

you’ve got that the wrong wary around brainiac…..

While I have no problem with roundabouts and believe they serve a useful purpose there is a problem in Grand Cayman in that the thousands of Americans and Canadian tourists who come here every year have never seen a roundabout and do not know what to do when entering one plus they are confused by opposite side driving. Having seen many vehicles with white license plates confused on roundabouts I am certain this is a problem.

I note frm a related article in the Compass that after completing Godfrey Nixon Way, the NRA wll proceed to add two lanes to the Linford Pierson Hwy. I wonder what are the plans to fix Eastern Avenue while they’re in the neighbourhood?? Oh, that would be common sense which is in very short supply at CIG and its related SAGC’s!!

I wonder if our politicians use the same roads we do??

It appears that the NRA is still not fixing the issue of having a two lane round-a-bout traffic exit onto a single lane road. (Godfrey Nixon Way) Great job NRA. Does anyone there know what they are doing? Come on guys this is one of the reason for so many accidents at this round-a-bout.

Rubbish. The exit can accomodate two cars side-by-side and then merge. Most accidents are caused by incompetent drivers, e.g. those who do not indicate their intentions before they make a manouver. Hopefully you are not included in that category.

Since you can’t make all drivers to be competent to drive round a bout, building fool proofed roads sounds like a must do thing. Unless you make it your life’ career to educate every single one who is incompetent.

        • Anonymous says:

I think the point is if people can’t manage that exit safely then they shouldn’t be driving on any road!

          • Anonymous says:

I never understood the need for signal lights or indicators, I already know where I’m going I don’t need a flashing light to tell me

          • Anonymous says:

some people honestly think they don’t need to use indicators on roundabouts because they have the right of way……….pure wonderland stuff…..

what about the bottleneck that is bobby thompson way?….why was work started then stopped?…..
