(CNS): The 22-year-old Jamaican beauty queen, who some say was robbed of the Miss Universe pageant title last month, possibly because of her short hair, will be coming to Cayman. Miss Jamaica Kaci Fennell will be hosting this year’s three-day Mardi Gras festival, which starts on 16 February through to the public holiday on 18 February.

Although Miss Colombia’s Paulina Vega won the glittering pageant in Las Vegas and Fennel came in fifth, many believed she should have taken the title and there were boos as well as chants from the live audience, and the hashtag #MissJamaicaWasRobbed was trending for days after the show.

Party organisers said the Mardi Gras in George Town will bring a welcome boost to Cayman’s capital for three days, with a food festival, a Fat Tuesday party, fireworks, a mini parade and an all day party on Ash Wednesday.

The party is moving to the capital after many years at Kaibo Restaurant in North Side as a way to kick-start the George Town area rejuvenation. Retailers and restaurateurs from the capital are also taking part, including Kirk Freeport, Hard Rock Café, Margaritaville and many others, with Jagermeister as the title sponsor and tens of thousands of beads on order.

The festival starts with a food festival, ‘Dinnertime with Swanky’ on Monday, which is free and will take place in front the Bayshore Mall with Swanky Kitchen Band providing entertainment.  On Tuesday a mini Mardi Gras parade starts at 7pm in the streets of downtown George Town, with costumes and beads and lots of festive music.  The parade will run the length of Harbour Drive from the GT Public Library to Fort Street towards the Cayman Islands National Museum.  In the evening a line-up of entertainment will be hosted by International Grammy Award Winner and Soul Train Winner FATMAN SCOOP, as well as a midnight fireworks display by the Hard Rock Café.

Then on holiday Wednesday, with some 16,000 guests from six expected cruise ships in the harbour, the street party will start at 10am and go on until midnight with entertainment, food and festivities all day on the harbour front.  Entry is free to everyone and organizers have not yet revealed the celebrity performer coming in for the evening’s entertainment.

“Giving life to the downtown area for three days will hopefully bring business numbers up to the various retailers and restaurants who have complained for years in the decline of life in the George Town area and to showcase the warm festive atmosphere that only George Town on the Waterfront can give,” a spokesperson for the organisers said.

Free bus shuttles will be provided on all three days from Seven Mile Beach and in the town area towards the Festival and thousands are expected to attend.  For more information visit www.CaymanMardiGras.com for more details.

I hope she gets a work permit so they don’t arrest her

You all are such idiots. Miss Jamaica has been invited down as a host but also to spend time with Miss Cayman to coach her about Miss Universe. Some of you people on here just amaze me with your stupidity and crab in the bucket comments.

Because she will bring an entrouge with her,who will obviously spent some money.you hater you,go crawl back into your den.you troll

I think it would have been better to invite Kaci as a guest to co -host alongside Toni. It looks as if the promoter/organizers of this event is shunning Miss Cayman. Maybe you’re not but it looks that way.

Ms Philippines or any other beauty queen for that matter will bring an entourage and money? How about Ms Norway? They have more money. We need to stop glorifying Jamaica and support our own people. Ms Cayman should be leading the festival.

It’s not always about a dollar Ha Foo, maybe you’re the troll because you have called me a hater because I feel we should sell our culture out? And guess we should be quiet about every developer/banker since they bring in money? Or does your argument re money only apply to Jamaicans who might accompany her? How do we know our government, people in private sector won’t be fool enough to pay for her and her entourage to come here?

Well would like to know who you are because clearly you must be a Jamaican or someone who has them on a pedestal so afraid to speak the truth. I have no hatred for anyone……I’m simply pro-Caymanian and no other nationality can come here and brainwash me to do otherwise.

Now, correct me if I am wrong but didn’t we just crown our own Miss Cayman? Surely she should be the one hosting the Cayman Mardi Gras?? Why am I not seeing the usual posters commenting about another ex-pat coming over here taking our jobs and opportunities? Go figure!

You’re so right. I have nothing personal against Miss Jamaica coming here but believe fundamentally that our reigning Miss cayman should be our beauty promoting activities.

Can you imagine if Miss UK or Miss Philipines had been invited to do the same? lol Poor Caymanians, they don’t realise Jamaicans will go anywhere in the world to get promote their dreams and their culture. It is only in Cayman where we have taken mindset that since we are inundated by Jamaican nationals we have to shut up and accept everything they desire.

I wonder if Jamaica will now reciprocate and allow our Miss Cayman to host a festival? If they don’t why not use their modus operandi and be vindictive and say no to all future Jamaican hosts? see how crazy it sounds, well that would very likely be their approach based on most reactions of denial by other countries.

Agreed!! Why is our beautiful Tonie Chisholm leading the Mardi Gras? But, it just goes to show what we are in our own country…..

Who organized this? None of the small business owners were included in any way. This has nothing to do with promoting GT businesses, just another big Kirk jerk off.

I am all for this event. Looking forward to attending and seeing Kaci!!

Who cares? You do not have to go.

  9. M. Mclaughlin says:

Day of Mourning? – It’s not mentioned in the Bible. None of the apostles observed it. Nowhere are Christians commanded to keep it. It was not even officially practiced until nearly 1000 years after Christ’s resurrection. Like so many other non-biblical “Christian” customs, it has pagan roots. It’s a sad fact that modern Christianity has appropriated so many customs from the practice of the heathens, that one might wonder if it should still be called Christianity.

Ash Wednesday is a poor day for a party. It is supposed to be a day of mourning.

You are right! No need whatsoever for a national holiday. Lets rejoin the rest of the world and get back to reality. Those that need to can nip into church on their way work for an early service.
