I have worked in the Human

I have worked in the Human Resources industry and can say from experience what many HR Managers and employers look for in the presentation of an application for employment.

Just a few pointers and I wish the best of luck to anyone searching for a job in this dull market right now, God Bless!

1. ALWAYS make certain to leave at least 2 contact numbers!

2. An email address in your name is better than prettyboy@gmail.com or hotgyal@yahoo.com, something like jane.doe@whatever.com or john_doe etc is MUCH more appealing.

3. VOICEMAIL messages!!!! It is such a TURNOFF for an employer if they do not reach you by phone and are subjected to the loud and lengthy reggae, soca, rap whatever it may be as a voicemail message and many will scratch you off their list of candidates because of it! Have a simple, polite, straight to the point message! It shows maturity and responsibility, no one wants to know your favourite genre of music!

4. Write a cover letter, and tailor each one to the job you are applying for, 1st paragraph should state the position you are applying for and where it was advertised etc, 2nd should state why you should be hired and mention any skills relevant to the position which you may possess, 3rd should be a "wrapup" thanking the recruiter for reveiwing your application, requesting an interview etc.

There is so much more to job-hunting than just this, but I hope these points are helpful and again best of luck!

Work permits: threat or opportunity?

I am going to discuss the relative merits of allowing versus restricting foreigners work in your beautiful country through the example of my family.

Might seem slightly off topic at first, but please bear with me, we'll get back to jobs and the local economy.

I am a computer geek, with 10 years of extremely diverse experience under my belt, I won't bore you with the details. People like me tend to be harmless, friendly, keen to share our skills and knowledge, and make disproportionately large amounts of dough from international clients. Most geeks might spend a small percentage of their income on silly gadgets, but the rest is spent on local goods and services. And not all of us spend all our time in front of the computer either: I happen to be a volunteer firefighter, participate in local sports, teach computer literacy in the commuinty, etc. And with computers becoming a major part in everyones life (your phone is a full-blown computer, all your electronic gadgets contain tiny compact computers called "microcontrollers") our work is not as abstract anymore as it used to be.

Even better yet, some of have spouses with more down-to-earth skills: My wife for example is into agriculture, adult education, teaching, and manual therapy to name just a few.

Imagine us moving to Cayman. Would we take away the jobs of two locals? I don't think so, how many people with the same skills run around unemployed? Instead we would improve the lives of everyone in the community, spread valuable work skills, provide new jobs first indirectly, possibly directly later.

Actually, I don't understand how come no software development firm has been established yet to tap into the constant supply of IT professionals trying to avoid burnout and get away from the shitty weather pretty much everywhere else in the developed world for a while.

Oh well, I'm just saying.

You ask why just caymanians?

You ask why just caymanians?  Because I am caymanian and I believe in my people.  I have alot of fellow caymanians that I talk to everyday, and these are hardworking caymanians whom are restless in seeking employment.  And I feel it for my people.  We have nowhere to go,. Expats on the otherhand can  return home and perhaps have a better chance at getting employment there.  I dont have anything against expats, but I strongly feel that we as a country need to start a recycle phase with employment to help us get through this recession period. 900 unemployed caymanians as per the media last week or the week before.  I am sure these are caymanians seeking employment on all levels of the employment ladder. There should be no excuse for a caymanian to be unemployed. I repeat NO caymanians. The permit board need to put a stop to issuing permits for expats for administrative, middle management, clerical etc, just to name a few.  I agree that there are alot of caymanian that are not willing to do the job or have an attitude problem, however, there is a caymanian out there that could do that job better. I believe the Govt employment agency and the work permit board need to consolidated into one department.  This could help the unemployment rate.  All the media frenzy and animosity that is being generated from the political mess is doing nothing but creating depression amongst us.  The caymanians are feel demoralized.

ExPAts that are Caymanian too

So why is it that a US citizen that has Caymanian heritage and is recently deemed a caymanian by Section 25 by right of descent not accepted as a Caymanian by Caymanians. In other words, my grandfather born and raised in Cayman had children in USA, their children obtain CI citizenship and want to come back as a Caymanian. But guess what, the empoyers do not even interview me as an applicant as a Caymanian. What more can one do to become accepted by real caymanians. I have Doctorate degrees in education, 35 years experience in field and no intereview. Plus yes I am a two home owner in CI. What do you receommend. I wil not move here permanently until I hold a respectable position.

How I wish predisposed personalities would wake up to the facts.

Instead of posting all this

Instead of posting all this rant you could have done the favour to one of those hardworking caymanians you speak about and post their information so that prospective employers can see it...or maybe someone from the employment agency/immigration...instead you chose to complain...how is that helping you or any of those unemployed persons you speak about? What have you done for any of them except "talk"?

Head out to the Ritz Carlton.

Head out to the Ritz Carlton. Wear a pressed shirt and pants. Bring a letter of reference from principal or teacher or pastor or businessman. Go to the HR department. Tell them you really want to work hard and will do any job to get started in hospitality industry, show up on time, and work whatever hours are needed. (it will definitely ruin your social life because they need you at the times people are out entertaining themselves) Tell them you know that making the customer happy is the most important thing in the business and that you can do it. You could start by busing tables, watch what the best waiters do and how the customers like to be treated, and before you know it you can be a fill in waiter when someone doesn't show up. Then some waiter is going to leave or screw up and you cqn get on full time. Believe me, you can make plenty of money as a waiter if you please the diners. then you can get into reservations or management. OR ask to work carrying luggage and watch the front desk and how it works so you can move up there. They actually do offer training. Best of luck.

This is an excellend idea to discuss jobs wanted and job opportunities - for employers to discuss what they are looking for in an employee and job seekers to share their experiences. You can also post resumes and jobs in the CNS free Classifieds section. Just click on "Place an ad".

Please try applying for jobs

Please try applying for jobs abroad.  Actually, large software companies tend to outsource IT workers from pools of large IT human resources with cheaper labour rates.  i.e.  India and China.  There are less IT jobs available in G7 countries unless the one is highly qualified.  All the best in your search.
