Alden takes RB as Marco beaten in GTC

| 24/05/2017

(CNS) The PPM suffered their biggest blow of the evening when the former finance minister, Marco Archer, was beaten in George Town Central by Kenneth Bryan (IND) with just 35 votes between them. Alden McLaughlin, whose position as premier was looking shakier as the evening wore on, secured his seat in Red Bay with 478 votes, while Denniston Tibbetts (CDP) took 272 votes and Dr Frank McField picked up just 92 seats.

The PPM also secured the GTE seat, which McTaggart took comfortably with 45.5% of the vote, while Joey Hew had an emphatic victory for the party in GTN with over 50.5% of the vote there.

However, with what appears to be a meltdown in Bodden Town for the PPM and the loss of three Cabinet ministers, McLaughlin is unlikely to keep his job as premier.

  1. Young Voter in GTC says:

Reading some of these comments and the reactions of persons seem so funny to me. 2013, Kenneth ran with the PPM. They campaigned for him and urged people to vote for him. If he was not qualified then, if he had a bad track record then, if he lacked the propper education then, if they knew he had a past then, what the hell happened??? They are honest people of integrity. So why would they beg me to vote for somebody that was not capable?? Did they lie to us? Why let him run with them? Why would the Premier have him as his “political assistant”? Obviously he was somebody 4 years ago when they needed to make up numbers…

People wake up and stop being stupid! Most of these people probably cannot even vote in GTC. And the others have been voting for Kurt and Alden just because. Obviously people like and respect Marco. No one said that he didnt do his job and perhaps did it WELL. But the way I see it is that the people of GTC felt that Kenneth would be a better VOICE for them and they have therefore chosen HIM to be their representative. Kenneth is somebody they see to be on their level whether lower or middle class. Same as Barbara and David. They are people WE feel care about us and not just our damn vote every 4 years.

There are people in GTC who felt that their voice was not heard and that they did not have a say in this country. We will now hold Kenneth accountable. He is a fighter who they feel will stand up. Wasn’t that a main reason for the OMOV? Do not compare and insult the people of GTC by saying we are like the people of WB. Becuase no matter what, the majority of them will never stand up for change and it shows. Nobody said that Kenneth should become minister for Finance. Nobody knows whether Marco would become that again if elected either. The same way persons are name calling KB and bashing him is the exact same way our young people are feeling oppressed and depressed and feeling that they are not or may never be good enough.

And certain members of the community allow it, even though they claim to wish us ALL the best. Yeah right! KB is a perfect example to prove that you do not need to have a “prestigious” last name or extaordinary college degree, or have a title behind your name to make a positive turnaround, and have a listening ear to your community to be their voice in the LA. If he beat somebody as indespensable as Marco it doesnt mean that Caymanians are stupid. It simply means something was WRONG. KB came out early and told the people what his plans were unlike most other candidates that poped up like last lap Jack and tried to shove all their meetings down our throats.

And yes, I too feel like Alden pulled a coward move and ran in Red Bay. Then he lied on Kenneth to say he’d been arrested more than once. If Marco was so important to the team he should have been placed somewhere safe. Not somewhere that we all knew would be a showdown of the night. So with that being said, it is what it is. Lets just push forward for the best interest of this country and not own selfish egos.

THE APPEARANCE OF HUMILITY BEATS EDUCATION …

    Meaning: Kenneth beats Marco ?

    • Anonymous says:

Blessed are the meek. Marco does not know the meaning of those words.

  3. Anonymous says:

After all is said and done, the only person that could beat Kenneth Bryan in GTC would have been Kurt Tibbetts and he retired………

Kenneth is a winner in his own right and Alden is a loser for making a “serious navigation error” as Master of MS Cayman Islands.

The PPM members should force Alden to resign as their leader and then let him go to the bush in East End and plant peppers and mango trees, to sell at our local supermarkets for half price.

I’m seeing a lot of comments that GTC made a huge mistake by voting out the ‘best finance minister’ in the Caribbean. Let us be very clear! 1 man 1 vote was primarily designed for people to elect the best representative for their own constituency, i.e. the one person they believed would best act in the community’s interest. It was NOT primarily designed for people to elect the best person to be a minister (finance or otherwise). Kenneth, as I understand it, was campaigning in GTC for close to a year. He put in the time and effort to show GTC that he wanted to represent them and would act in their interest. Marco was shoved (with a proverbial gun to his head) into GTC a couple months ago. Thus the final results are unsurprising. Ironically, if this was the previous voting system, Marco wouldn’t have had a problem getting elected and would have most likely retained his ministerial position. 1 man 1 vote (which PPM campaigned on in 2013) essentially did Marco in .

Alden made a “Nuclear Blunder” when he put Margo instead of Lucille in GTC. If the two had been reversed, Bryan would still have won but Marco would have been safe in Prospect. A compromise that Marco could be the new Premier for the Cayman Islands may have worked with the now stronger independants.

      • Anonymous says:

But it’s clear Alden only cares for Alden. He didn’t mind letting Marco go and Wayne as long as he got back in!

For love of Country? Isn’t that what PPM go on and on about???

HA! For love of self dear folks, love of self!!!

    • Anonymous says:

Exactly, Marco is stronger than some of those elected in George Town and would have been elected under the old system.

  5. Anonymous says:

Marco didn’t lose to Kenneth, he lost to money.
Such a shame that GTC could be bought and now they look like even more degenerate than any of the WBs.

  6. Anonymous says:

Not to worry – One of the first statements from Kenneth was that he wishes to work with Marco – I Pray that for the benefit of our beloved Cayman, the two men will put the well being of the people first, lay aside their differences and work hard together. Let us all do GOOD – TOGETHER

    • Anonymous says:

“work hard together” Translation: “please, please, please teach me everything you know”

      • Anonymous says:

Well, that makes Kenneth quite wise, doesn’t it? To seek the advise of a more knowledgeable individual.

  7. Anonymous says:

Alden set Marco up for failure and ran in Red Bay where he knew he would be safe in getting elected. If he wanted t sacrifice someone he should have put David Wight in GTC where he is popular and moved Marco to either GTW or GTS where he would have been safe but being pompous and arrogant, he felt that the people would not move Marco because he felt he was untouchable and would not stand a chance of losing against Kenneth..Wrong Strategy by the former premier and I still think he was a coward for running to the safe seat in Red Bay and leaving his colleagues to fight the battles he couldn’t or was afraid to fight…Thank God there is no chance of him becoming Premier again

    • frangipani says:

10.33. I couldn’t agree with you more. So sad that Marco and the ppm party didn’t stand up to against this move. the handwriting was on the wall

  8. Anonymous says:

Congratulations GTC! You voted out the Finance Minister of the Year in the Caribbean for Kenneth. You have truly screwed the country and you constituency. Well done!

    • Anonymous says:

Unfortunately the whole country will suffer for their ignorance!!!

    • Anonymous says:

Don’t blame Kenneth, blame Alden for putting him there because he (Alden) wasn’t willing to take the chance that he would not get back in..

  9. Anonymous says:

Alden sacrificed the best option for Finance Minister for his own elf preservation. THAT is a clear message the country is not is first priority.

  10. Anonymous says:

Marco, despite is book smarts, is just a grunt – a soldier who follows orders (no matter how irrational) without question. He marched right into a slaughter on the party’s orders. Hope he learns his lesson next time and not allow himself to be sacrificed so senselessly. You’re better than that Marco. Never let cowards use you to save themselves.

    • nikolaus foster says:

      well said

    • I have a Question says:

But my question is, why Marco? Could PPM not have put up anyone else instead of him? Why not just take the loss of loosing a less important member to Bryan? While Archer would be elected somewhere else

      • Anonymous says:

I think it was arrogance, i.e. that Kenneth was easy to be beaten. Oh were they so wrong!

        • Anonymous says:

I think Aden saw the rise of Marco and was willing to put it down at all cost.

      • Anonymous says:

Marco is good and honest. He doesn’t fit into PPM does he?

I say to Mr. Archer; enjoy the next four years, sit back and watch the shit-show begin. You will be missed by those who have enough intellect to understand how this really works.

In my opinion PPM sacrificed those who were not corrupt, those who could not be bent or bought, those that actually did the job right!

        PPM – a cult.

    • Anonymous says:

      I disagree; I think you’re being short-sighted.

Sometimes, the best way to show someone’s true colours is to let the chips fall in place for the public to see.

That is what happened in GTC, Marco knew the chance he was taking but he did it anyway; he will rise again and when he does the PPM will be sorry.

4 years goes by quickly and Marco will not forget what PPM did to him and how they used him for their own selfish gain, only to dispose of him as if he was a piece of trash!

My; how we Caymanians hate each other so! SMH

  11. Mikey says:

Brexit – UK, Trump – US, CAYXIT – Cayman. Be careful what you wish for. What is it that Caymanians want? These are interesting times ahead. Cayman has said no to CDP, No to PPM what’s next. Who will run the country. Uncertain times ahead.

  12. R.U.Kiddingme says:

The 35 votes that Kenneth won by was from the entitled family that sits in their yard all day next to Archie’s bar, waiting for handouts. Sad day for the Cayman Islands when you choose Kenneth over Marco. Trash over treasure. I say keep the dump in GT, you all deserve it.

    • Anonymous says:

I so agree with you, better yet put it in Kenneth’s back yard. So so disappointed with GTC. Kenneth Bryan – tell me I am dreaming….

  13. Anonomyous says:

Sad day for Cayman to lose the best Marco. Shame on you Alden it should have been you.

    • Anonymous says:

Hey they voted Tara back in…and what has she done for the country? Ok she raised the minimum wage, but it didn’t give caymanians more jobs, she didn’t do anything for the school system if anything its worse. And than she changed the Pension law, so in her little brain it would bring jobs in for Caymanians!!! If it hasn’t before it surely isn’t now!!!

  14. Anonymous says:

As an outsider , who’s opinion I’m sure none of you care about ..but I’m going to give it anyway, you just voted out one of the only , if not the only competent and qualified politicians you had. May not have been a nice person or ran on a promise of giving all caymanians jobs and riches but he seemed to me to know what he was doing and was recognised as such locally and even internationally .
I’m sure a lot of the financial services people are shaking their heads in disbelief .

  15. Anonymous says:

GTC what have you done ??

  16. Michel says:

    Congratulations Kenneth

  17. Anonymous says:

Its totally wrong that government employees are there celebrating and jumping up and down…….yes feel proud that your candidate won and offer congratulations but remember that you are still a civil servant and this is against your civil service laws. Guess this is indicative of the possible lawless state we have to deal with for another 4 years.

  18. Anonymous says:

Marco allowed Alden to lead him to the slaughter to save his own a**. This was not a vote against Marco, it was a vote against Alden and Marco has paid the price. We have lost a great leader, who was hard working and honest. I wish Kenny all the best and I’m happy for him. I’m saddened to have lost an exemplary member of our government but Marco must take some responsibility for allowing the Progressives to put his political career to an end.

    • Ron the Observer says:

I couldn’t have said it better myself. Many persons saw a vote for Marco as a vote for Alden; therefore the repudiation of the PPM party in GTC was unfortunately directed at Marco, who was one of the best candidates to grace the cabinet, with his minor flaws here and there. Marco would’ve been excellent in gov’t or on the back bench. Alden once again demonstrated, to Kenneth’s point, that he will do anything to ensure his own political future and sacrifice whomever he must.

  19. Unison says:

It shows you HOW MUCH EDUCATION means nothing to Caymanians!

It’s if you can relate with people and HOW you relate ?

  20. Trish says:

Congrats, Kenneth. You won fair and square. We know Alden didn’t run against you because he has coward tendencies. I’m glad that going forward he’ll have no real say anymore.

  21. Anonymous says:

Alden is a big coward..He should have stayed in GTC, instead he ran to safe ground and left Marco to be slaughtered at the trough..

    • Anonymous says:

Alden is a snake and I hope Marco sees that. He should move with the independents. He was the sacrificial lamb and now the best talent that party had was gone. Kenneth I’m happy for you but if only you and Marco had run separately. God bless our country for such a smooth peaceful day yesterday at the polls

    • Mista Man says:

Alden promise Marco a job….in his back yard lol..see what you get for faith in wicked men?????

  22. Anonymous says:

Good riddance to that very arrogant man. Some of the others need to move on also!

  23. Anonymous says:

Cayman Islands you have just shown your ignorance to the whole world. Kenny can’t do what Marco has done.

    • Anonymous says:

You mean like being utterly out of touch with regular people struggling to make ends meet?

      • R.U.Kiddingme says:

How is Marco responsible for you making ends meet? Do you have a job, are you willing to work?

      • Anonymous says:

Why are you struggling? Why is that any governments fault? Did you study hard in school? Have you continued to educate yourself? Did you take care to not create more children than you could really look after? And so on.

It is time we all are responsible for our own situations. Government can provide the playing field but they CANNOT make you/me a successful/competent player. That is up to us.
