50% of votes already in

(CNS Election): More than half of the 21,212 people eligible to vote had already been to the polling stations by noon Wednesday, in what officials are hoping will be a great turnout for this historic Election Day. All nineteen constituencies had seen considerable traffic by lunchtime, and apart from a few “hitches and glitches”, operations were running smoothly, Deputy Supervisor of Elections Sheena Glasgow told CNS.

One unidentified candidate was reportedly canvassing early Wednesday in George Town, but officials from the Elections Office said that was reported to the RCIPS.

Glasgow said that by and large everything was going well and the office was pleased with the overall progress of the morning.

“There are always little glitches and hitches here and there, but overall there has not been anything that we could not deal with and no voters have been impacted by any of the technical issues.”

She added that there were no reports of unrest, and prisoners who are being held on remand at HMP Northward and Fairbanks who are entitled to vote had been taken to the polls without incident.

“The Elections Office continues to encourage voters to come out and vote,” Glasgow said.

Hoping for a high turnout, given the increase in the number of postal and mobile votes, she said it would be nice to get an historic turnout for the historic election.

Cayman has a history of high turnouts and Glasgow said they would be pleased to see that maintained for the first ever vote in single-member constituencies.

George Town South and George Town Central were the busiest stations during the morning, but nationally more than 11,000 people had voted by noon. However, Supervisor Wesley Howell urged people not to leave it until the last minute and reminded voters that they have just one vote.

“I ask voters to be mindful of casting only one vote in our new ‘one person, one vote’ system,” he said. “So far, the voting has been smooth for the most part, barring a few instances of canvassing beyond last midnight and several reports of canvassing within the 300 feet boundary today by candidate agents.”

He added, “All reports are being looked into by the RCIPS.”
