Nickolas DaCosta (25) running as an independent against Moses Kirkconnell for CBWLC

(CNS Elections): After keeping a very tight lid on exactly who they would be fielding and where, the Progressive candidates began to emerge Wednesday morning for nomination. The current speaker of the House, Julianna O’Connor-Connolly, was nominated for the first time as a PPM candidate for Cayman Brac East, while Moses Kirkconnell was nominated for Cayman Brac West and Little Cayman. In George Town, Roy McTaggart was nominated in GTE and Joey Hew in GTN.

Edward Chisholm was nominated in North Side, hoping to win back for the PPM the seat that was held by his late mother and former speaker, Edna Moyle. Political newcomer Maxine Bodden-Robinson was nominated in Bodden Town West, while incumbents Osbourne Bodden and Wayne Panton were nominated for BTE and Newlands respectively.

By noon, 23 independent candidates had also been officially nominated across the islands, including one of the youngest candidates to ever contest an election in the Cayman Islands. Nickolas DaCosta, who is just 25, has been nominated as an independent candidate for CBWLC, taking on Deputy Premier Moses Kirkconnell.

Check back to CNS for more Nomination story updates throughout the Day.

Have any candidates other than the independents even had a meeting? Too little too late….

If you are a US citizen, attending state university in a state where you have residency, you qualify for in state tuition rates. I can’t help but wonder if good old Cayman has footed a 100% scholarship for some of our young Caymaricans who were in turn refunded 75% of the money to keep as their own.

    • Anonymous says:

If a Caymanian gets a government scholarship for university and is also a US citizen, the university still counts them as a foreign student with international student tuition. I know, I was one. I paid the same tuition as my Caymanian school mates who had no US passport.

      • Anonymous says:

That is incorrect. If you are a US citizen and have residency (been living in the state for more than 12 months) then you automatically get “in-state fees” which are about 25% of the cost of a regular international student. That is FACT!

        • Anonymous says:

That fact is only true for state universities in Florida. Private universities and other states, there are 49 others, have different rules.

What experience did either Brac MLA ‘s have prior to being elected? Nickolas began service at a young age: debate team, Leo’s Club, Junior Achievement, Volunteer in schools. These are just the obvious.

Ms Julie was a lawyer and was old enough to have had some life experience. Mr. Kirkconnell was a businessman with many years of experience in various types of business including tourism.
I am sure both of the above were involved in many extracurricular activities during their school years.

This is a joke right? They both have had successful careers in business and law. Volunteering is great but what about actually working in life? Mister DaCosta will be great in his time but he has nothing to offer as he has never had any sort of career.

Bless his lil heart. That might qualify him for Miss Cayman.

Wow. Why is there so much vitriol for a young person who wants to serve their country? People spend hours on here deriding MLAs for having an easy, do-nothing job and as soon as a young person bravely steps up to the plate, all of a sudden the job requires a rocket scientist. The youngest MP in the United Kingdom, a country of 65 million people, was elected when she was 20 years old (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mhairi_Black). She was seen as a breath of fresh air. What does Mr. DaCosta’s record of civic engagement in another country say other than he pays attention to the world around him where so many do not, and carries out his duty to be informed and vote? Mr. DaCosta also happens to be the youngest member of the Planning Appeals Tribunal, right here in Cayman. That is an unpaid position. Is it so offensive to see a young man attempting to make a difference? He just HAS to be trying to board the gravy train? Honestly people.

I am well and truly disgusted. I am 28 years old, have had current MLAs tell me I must run for office some day for many years and have never seen a more discouraging dialogue than this. Think about the message you’re sending to the next generation or watch your politicians get older, dumber, more entitled and self-interested with every election. I would slap every single one of you in the face. Grow up and recognise that we need a variety of representatives to tackle the challenges we face. The government has had no strategy for how to enhance the prospects of his and my generation in the very challenging world we live in today. Young people are castigated for not voting in the numbers they should. Perhaps if they saw one of their own involved, they would.

It’s because you, the people trying to tear this young man commenting on this article, continue to vote for the same old people that we keep getting the same old thing around here. If I’ve learned one thing from these comments it’s that people are quite happy with the devils they know. So you, and all of us will continue to live in a hell of no progress on the issues that really matter to the ordinary person while the only measures that get through the LA have been asked for behind the scenes by the Caymanian merchant class, foreign business interests, the financial services industry and the other branches and arms of government. Sounds great doesn’t it! Enjoy having the representatives you deserve. We’ll wait until they’re all dead – and hopefully most of you as well – before running ourselves. This makes me sick. Go away and think about how you would feel if this was your son or daughter. You should all be ashamed.

Read the Cayman Islands Constitution then you may understand.

    • Anonymous says:

Here is one way to think about it. let’s pretend The Cayman Islands was a company called Cayman Inc.

      • Cayman Inc has a budget of over CI$1 billion
      • Cayman Inc over 55,000 residents
      • Cayman Inc has a multitude of complex issues to grapple with (I won’t get into them on this post)
      • Cayman Inc has 19 members of the Board of Directors
      • every voter is a shareholder in Cayman Inc
      • every shareholder has their life’s savings invested in Cayman Inc
      • the AGM of Cayman Inc is May 24th, 2017

If this was truly a company in which you have invested your life’s savings:
1 – would you vote for that person to sit on the Board of Directors of a billion dollar company to represent your interests?

2 – Are they capable to protecting your life’s savings and making good decisions to strengthen Cayman Inc, a billion dollar company, and make it a better company?

If Cayman was indeed a company and you cannot honestly answer YES to each of these questions then perhaps you shouldn’t vote for that person!!!

There has to be more claim to operate this country than youth or even being a well rounded young person. Cayman has made a lot of progress in the last few years. Now is not the time to experiment and hope for the best. Everything in it’s time. Even the best wine has to age appropriately. In Cayman Brac progress has been made, still many things to do but nontheless movement is in the right direction.

Well said. The facts are the facts. Make sure you’re eligible to stand as a candidate though.

    • Anonymous says:

It seems like you have a lot of time to write such a lengthy epistle. Let’s look at what the government has actually done for people in yours and his generation.

From my recollection there have been huge strides taken in e-Business. Cayman is working with Estonia (the world leader in e-business) to bring Cayman up to speed and lead the region.

From a regulatory standpoint, Cayman is one of the best connected island nations in the world. We literally have everything connected to us via LTE, internet, fibre optics, etc.

The Cayman Islands are investing in alternative energy and changing the way we produce our electricity.

In particular, the Brac has been able to send students to be certified through internship programs to become ASE certified mechanics.

Further to this, the Brac has been the training site for the new EMT’s where young people can begin their career in a field of healthcare.

Because you come running to the aid of someone who has never experienced these things doesn’t mean that they aren’t happening.

I can assure you, that we, the people (who are full time Caymanian residents) in Cayman Brac are not getting “the same old thing.” More and more families are returning to the Brac because they see the beauty in what we have to offer. Nick himself shared how he loved the story in the Compass of another young Bracker returning home.

It looks to me like all the right things are being done already. There’s more to come but we must be fair and realize that new things are NOT necessarily better than the tried and true methods and people that we have that are finally bringing the Brac into the limelight.

Actually it doesn’t take me very long to write well at all. I was born with it and enhanced it through postgraduate tertiary education and legal practice.

There have been very modest strides in e-business. Immigration has made some headway with this, as has the DVDL. Perhaps you can point me to some other examples. They don’t amount to much. If phone bills weren’t so extravagant despite deregulation and re-regulation of the industry, and if businesses hadn’t complained they were being held back by slow speeds and lack of up-to-date services, and if our main providers weren’t regional companies who identified Cayman as a prime candidate for investment, those improvements would not have happened. There have been very modest steps toward alternative energy as well, mostly by CUC, the company everyone loves to hate. You may be interested to know the Dangerous Substances Law just passed has made it illegal for all mobile suppliers of fuel to operate unless they adopt the same container filling process Rubis and Sol use. I wonder who asked for that?

Forgive me for saying this, but the Brac is really not important in the grand scheme of things. It’s 2,000 parochial, backwards, bible-thumping people mostly dependent on the government for a salary and if not then dependent on government employees for business, prancing and yapping about the place. A fair number of them have come to Grand Cayman and made respectable incomes and in some cases small fortunes. Good for them. Just underscores the reality: the business of the Cayman Islands is done right here in Grand Cayman, where the overwhelmingly vast majority of people in the Cayman Islands, Caymanian and non-Caymanian, make their livelihoods, run the businesses with outposts in the Brac that allow you all to claim a modern existence, and carry out all the individual and business activities that enable the Brac to be subsidised to the extent it is. If the Brac is being “brought into the limelight” it’s because disproportionate amounts of indirect tax generated on Grand Cayman are being directed your greedy way or because foreign business interests like Le Soleil have put up the capital (of course, you don’t appreciate them either). And all of that is because you have elected the same politicians time and time again that they’re now considered ‘heavyweights’ in our political arena, people with jobs for life who…well…we just vote for, right? And all they do, they do for you 2,000 people. Prime example: your flights have always been subsidised so you have the same choice of times you would have if you lived in Miami, but that wasn’t good enough so we had to give you flights FROM Miami!

I am not standing up for the Brac, I am standing up for the right of my generation to be part of the political process. I couldn’t care less what happens over on that rock – I never think about it and my head hurts when people make me. Personally I love how Brackers hijacked this article about the slate of candidates we have all across the 18 constituencies when you only have 2 of them, one shared with another island because it proves everything I said above, and something you said as well only you said it about me: you folks must have a lot of time on your hands!

Time taken to write this comment: 13 minutes. Your turn, same 13 minutes.

        • Anonymous says:

I’m so glad that you were born with ability to write. The rest of the world usually learns to do it over time. I guess you’re one of the ones who came out typing on your tablet.

I’m certainly proud that you’ve been able to get your various degrees sorted and put together. Many of us had them before you knew what college was. I love to hear what you think about the Brac… zzzz. Pardon me I must have dozed off there. The article is written about the Brac so no one is hijacked anything.

I guess you don’t think everyone should play by the same rules in the fuel market and that only the “big players” should be held to a standard. The idea behind mobile fuel regulations is the safety of all involved. Just imagine how many of these little trucks carrying around fuel containers could endanger everyone’s lives?!

The modest steps that you refer to are steps none the less. I remember a famous saying “one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” It all starts with one step. Maybe you came out walking too though.

You can joke all you want about the Brackers that are in Grand Cayman and the life they live but what you fail to realize is that those same people run the islands… All the Cayman Islands. Look at all the top government positions. Look at all the private companies in Cayman. Look at who gets things done? All Brackers. The same two Brackers that have faithfully and properly represented us for the last 12 years will do so for another 4. These people are not old or out of touch. They are in the know and have their fingers on the pulse with everything that is happening both locally and internationally.

The last thing we need is some slick talking person who has never done anything in life to come and tell us what we’ve done wrong. We had one of them before. He’s been voted out. We’ll keep the wisdom in our current leaders and continue to steer the island in the right direction.

Subsidies regarding flights are a necessary evil but with tourism on the sister islands up over 15% it will find its balance as everything does. We love Le Spliel D’Or. It’s the new guy that is trying to run that business off. While many other private businesses have started in the last few years its only been the political cry baby that has had to close his property.

While we can’t decide on how the electoral boundaries happen we can say “read the constitution” and you’ll be happy to know that in there it states that the sister islands will return 2 members. Now I mightn’t have a law degree, but if what I read is correct then we should probably put 2 members back in since we have that written in that little document.

Time taken was 12 minutes 43 seconds. Hey, have at it. I was using my phone too so maybe an adjusted time of about 10 minutes seems reasonable.

Truth is, whoever is so pro Moses here and downgrading someone who has not had the opportunity to prove himself is doing Moses no favours at all. Very mean spirited. Makes me want to vote for Nickolas. Back off, get a life, and stop your bullying. Doesn’t say much for Caymankind.

I didn’t actually see too many people tearing anyone down. What I read is that he doesn’t meet the requirements to run for office and that he doesn’t have any experience.

  11. Anonymous says:

WOW…..the insipid and the thoughtless are in full force. What’s the use of having an election if there are no challenges to the incumbents. I can’t decide what exactly is the problem. Whatever career or passion we each have chosen we all started as inexperienced, if he wants to be a politician, when exactly should he start, do pray tell. Maybe when he’s old and has no idea when its time to throw in the towel. You have people saying Mr. DaCosta is two young an inexperienced, so don’t vote for him. Then there are those who complain that Moses and Julie haven’t done anything so don’t vote for them. And then people who say Mr. Dixon’s track record for the Brac is sketchy. He’s been away for years and didn’t give a rats ass about the Brac and now he’s on the political band wagon. And then dear Maxine, just please give her credit for endurance and longevity. So Cayman Brac, who are you going to elect come May 24th. I would suggest that because we pride ourselves on being sensible, tolerant, kind, humble and generous that we stop with the bashing of the candidates and just let your conscience be your guide. Except for the Cayman Brac Mafia ensemble (they exists), don’t expect them to find theirs.

Thoughtless is willfully becoming a Notary Public in another country.

Thoughtless is willfully applying and becoming a citizen of another country.

Swearing allegiance to another country and running in ours? Does he have any loyalty?

I see piped water, new roads, new swimming pool, completed sports complex, track, FIFA soccer pitch, jobs and training for many young Brackers, UCCI campus, more airlift than ever before, increased tourist arrivals, improved airport, new fire truck coming, new ambulance coming, first helipad on the Brac, additional nurse in Little Cayman, dedicated emergency room doctor for the Brac.

Even if you were blind you could still know the major improvements the sister islands have had in the last 4 years.

Nickolas Dacosta is a very nice young man. As a voter in Cayman Brac West I have no intention of voting for him because he seems to think that youth and inexperience are now actual qualifications that enhance him in some way. People supporting him here seem to think that if we vote him in young people will suddenly come racing back to the Brac in their droves. Based on what exactly? He thinks we should reopen Divi and The Alexander. So does every other guy propping up the bar here…. He says he isn’t going to be a career politician, but doesn’t bother with an actual career before he jumps into the political arena.

Working is fine, but what about the volunteering aspect that provides more than any job could ever do. I’m not talking about showing up for a picture but rather actually working alongside people. Getting sweaty and putting in hours. What about when it’s your money that has to provide for your future and not someone else’s? We have to start somewhere yes. We have to learn through serving and experiencing every level.

When it comes time to lead, then the people chose you because you have shown your leadership in your ability to work with and for them.

      • Anonymous says:

The Pond team thinks we are all idiots. They will see Brackers aren’t easily fooled. Sorry mista.dacosta you might let them use you but they aren’t using us.

Love the spelling of Mo$e$, it helps to remind everyone of the millions in investment he has helped to attract to Cayman and now to Little & Brac. Dart is buying up Little Cayman. Dart, the goat farm people, Maryianna buying up everything in Cayman Brac.

      • Anonymous says:

Mirjana and the goat people maybe buying up the Brac but they have created no employment for Caymanians because they do not hire Caymanians. Brackas will not take abuse in the workplace so they are not a good fit for Mirjana. She only wants foreigners that she can control. If you had the stats on how many she has hired and fired or who have left her and said “thank God” you would understand what we are saying. Also ask for her stats on room tax paid – very little as there are very little guests and the few guests do nothing local but stay on site.

        • Anonymous says:

I guess Mirjana doesn’t buy anything locally either? Things like water, groceries, fill, electricity, gas, airline tickets, and the list goes on. Guess what genius, she therefore employs CAYMANIANS!!!!

So stupid, run away investors that’s the way for development. The “foreigners” that she employs carry out jobs that most Caymanians do not want. Her investment has grown the Brac economy. Without the revenue from her project civil servants would have been laid off long ago.

8:13 “Condemnation without investigation is the height of ignorance” is as true today as when it was first uttered. It is quite obvious that you have no grasp of what it takes to move a country forward.

Be honest, the real money is behind young Mr. Decosta. The good doctor $teve, the $cott$ & Whitey

The least you could do is learn to spell his name…

Bro, his name is like 4 scrolls up. Learn to spell.

        • Anonymous says:

Funny how when the truth hits you in the face you have to divert. Decosta, DeCosta, decosta De Costa is all the same in this case. He is a young man that is being used by people who want to gain control of the government for their own profits.

What about Maxine McCoy Moore? Heard she trying again

    • Anonymous says:

Ah yes, it would not be an election without Maxine. I hope she will get her money back this time (but if she gets 30 votes, I think that would be considered a victory in her eyes and encouragement to plan for 2021. Go Maxine – LMAO

Inexperience versus delivered manifesto. Only choice is Moses K.

    • Anonymous says:

Youthful exuberance versus deep pockets and Lodge – just don’t know what Mr. Mo$es$ Trump is going to do on the opposition benches this time.

Unna heard it here first – Mr. McKeeva is going to be back in charge and CNS can start writing about him for the next four years.

Who is financing the puppet? Is it the person wanting to bring ecological disaster to Cayman Brac? Or is it brothers who wanted to control the government last election?

      • Anonymous says:

You mean Mr. I want to be important versus Mr. I have delivered on my promises and continue to do so.

      • Anonymous says:

Interesting how the youthful exuberance you speak of has yet to show any of it outside playing on a piano. Looking for a fat check and nothing to lose. Hey, who wouldn’t apply for the job?

Guess you need only be Caymanian to run.

        • Anonymous says:

A Caymanian that is on the voters list in Florida hmmmmm.

        • Anonymous says:

Of course he is yet to “show any of it,” as he has not yet been given the opportunity to do so. It’s time to open up and be susceptible to change and improvement, which is what he’s promising. Give the guy a chance. If it all goes to hell, vote Moses back in in 4 years, but at least, for ONCE, the brackers can say they gave change and progression a solid effort.

          • Anonymous says:

I need to make sure I have food on my table and to feed my children for the next 4 years. I can’t afford to “give him a chance.”

Feeding me up until elections doesn’t give me the steady income I have gotten in the last 4 years.

So, your paycheck is directly correlated with who’s in office? What, if he gets in, you’re gonna get fired? Sounds like you’re in a crappier position than you think.

              • Anonymous says:

We’ll all be fired if we “give a chance” to someone who has no experience.

I’m not getting into a plane with a pilot who has never flown.

Take a seat in coach, yes I said it, stop taking first class seats when you didn’t pay!!!

                • Anonymous says:

You shouldn’t have to be bought to vote. It seems money and power talks and it’s for their own greed not for the betterment of the people and obviously people can’t see that. It’s a shame you have to pay for bills buy furniture or appliances or offer cash to get a vote. Play fair if so much has been done then you should not have to worry about another 4 Years.

Ah yes the giving out of $500.00 prizes to special people.

Because you have your payout doesn’t mean I want to spend out of my savings to live through 4 years of inexperienced chaos.

I know that the 2 representatives in there now will be looking out for the interest of the island as a whole and I know that they want what is best for each of us. They aren’t looking to get rich off being a career politician. They have their money and they are helping us get ours too. I was so happy to finally have a pay increase and a bonus. This government has really shown how to run a country. The youth have their place, but when you’ve never run a company or hired a person in your life… who are you trying to fool?

Family will support but we need proven leadership!

So Cayman Brac should be the guinea pig while the new candidates have a chance? Then vote Moses back in to clean up the mess? Do you realize who stupid you sound? Not today bobo or any other day.

            • Anonymous says:

Cayman Brac should be good for something at least once… so yea, why not?

So Alden sent Marco to do his dirty work in Central ?wow what a coward

    • Anonymous says:

      It’s called strategy!

      • Anonymous says:

Marco is clearly the new leader of PPM, or should be and best suited for Premier if elected with a PPM team or even many INDs would support him as Premier. GTC was more of Kurt’s base and they’re now passing from KT to MA, congrats!

Last election was hoping Marco would keep lead over Alden but he was close and has gained the respect of all Caymanians.

GTC remember Marco has been a great example of a GT young man who has worked hard and stayed focused, he’s a great example to your people especially GTC, that it pays to make good choices.

The title of this article and photo do not match. It clearly states that Nickolas DaCosta is running as an independent candidate, yet his photo is featured under the title emphasizing PPM candidates. This is quite misleading, and I’m sure there are many people who won’t take the time to actually read the description for clarification.

CNS: Valid point, so I changed the heading to include independents.
