Posted on Fri, 02/24/2012 - 09:18
Within three months of being presented to Cabinet
77% (346 votes)
Within six months of being presented to Cabinet
13% (59 votes)
It should be done at the same time as the general elections

If the petiton passes the
If the petiton passes the threshold to trigger a referendum, it should happen by the date in the petition. 3 months / six months is an irrelevant question as there is no option for the Government to extend beyond the petitioned date if the petition reaches its threshold. The only improvement I'd like to see in future petitions is the actual wording of the question. Take a cue from 'propositions' in (some) American elections. Put the question (and the date) that you want in the petition itself.
Every single poll that
Every single poll that relates to changing the leadership always has a firm majority of votes. One man one vote will finally give Cayman the type of Government and leadership that will be for the people and the country. Do it....sign the petition.

Please e-mail
Please e-mail oneman.cayman@gmail.com to arrange to sign the petition.
It is going around many offices and such but some have probably refused to allow it to be passed around because they think it is 'political'. I imagine a trip to a supermarket on Saturday would help too.
Has anyone answered your
Has anyone answered your question? How can we sign if we don't know where to go to sign. PLEASE somebody out there must know?

Place to sign the petition
I signed it at Rooster's reception desk. Very straightforward.
So basically a referendum is
So basically a referendum is useless as the poster above says as the reigning party can refuse it?
CNS: No, the poster was wrong. If 25% of the electorate sign the petition, it is binding. The ruling administration cannot refuse it.
You must have a reading
You must have a reading disability. CNS quoted the section of the Constitution that says that if passed by a majority of voters a referendum is BINDING on the govt.
A wa kinda poll this. A
A wa kinda poll this. A Peoples referndum has to be carried to teh HOuse to vote on or Im mistaken? If so, it does not neccesarily mean that it will recive the requisite number of votes if teh Government who holds te majority of seats votes against it? EDucate me CNS educate I and I. Peace.
CNS: From the 2009 constitution, Part IV, section 70:
People-initiated referendums
(1) Without prejudice to section 69, a law enacted by the Legislature shall make provision to hold a referendum amongst persons registered as electors in accordance with section 90 on a matter or matters of national importance that do not contravene any part of the Bill of Rights or any other part of this Constitution.
(2) Before a referendum under this section may be held—
(a) there shall be presented to the Cabinet a petition signed by not less than 25 per cent of persons registered as electors in accordance with section 90;
(b) the Cabinet shall settle the wording of a referendum question or questions within a reasonable time period as prescribed by law; and
(c) the Cabinet shall make a determination on the date the referendum shall be held in a manner prescribed by law.
(3) Subject to this Constitution, a referendum under this section shall be binding on the
Government and the Legislature if assented to by more than 50 per cent of persons registered as electors in accordance with section 90.
I am afraid that the UK /
I am afraid that the UK / Local authorities have made it so easy for the MLAs to undermind the wishes of the electorate. I must wonder how Caymanians could have been so deceived in voting for this Constitution we have now. On the matter of referendum, it should have read:-
(2) Before a referendum under this section may be held—
(c) the Cabinet shall make a determination on the date the referendum shall be held in a manner prescribed by law NO LONGER THAN 6 MONTHS OF ITS PRESENTATION.
.
Thanks for your response,
Thanks for your response, CNS. There would not be much point in having a referendum if the govt. of the day could simply vote it down. The voice of 50%+ of the entire voting population must have greater authority than 15 elected representatives only elected in their districts and usually by less than the majority of voters.
